Silver Spring, MD – The National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship (NCCS) issued the following statement after the announcement of this year’s winners for the Nobel Prize in Medicine, James P. Allison and Tasuku Honjo, whose research into the human immune system led to immunotherapy cancer drugs.

“The National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship (NCCS) congratulates Dr. James Allison and Dr. Tasuku Honjo for their breakthrough research on the mechanisms of our immune system,” said Shelley Fuld Nasso, CEO of NCCS. “Their important work laid a foundation for a new era in cancer treatment with immunotherapy drugs. While a great deal of work remains in research and drug development to fully harness the potential of immunotherapy, many cancer patients are living longer and better lives because of these treatment advances. On behalf of cancer patients, survivors, and their families, we thank Mr. Allison and Mr. Honjo for their years of work and dedication and commend them for this well-deserved honor.”
