Staff a Booth at a Cancer Event
NCCS can't keep track of every single local cancer event – but you may know of something that's going on in your hometown. By staffing an NCCS booth at a local event, you are publicizing NCCS and the important work we do and giving us a face and a real live voice in your own community. You can also explain the issues NCCS is working on and the services, such as the Cancer Survival Toolbox®. You can meet people who share your experiences with cancer and who want to become advocates – even those who don't know they want to join yet!
Find out what events are taking place in your area by calling your local hospitals, Wellness Community, other cancer advocacy groups, or chamber of commerce. There may be a cancer fundraiser, such as a run/walk coming up. Or maybe your area hospital is hosting a health fair. These are great opportunities to publicize the work of NCCS!
NCCS holds events as well, so pay attention to the action alerts we send out. We may be looking for help at an event.
Ask the event organizers for permission to set up an NCCS booth and find out what their requirements are.
Talk to us. We'll supply you with literature, NCCS network sign-up cards, and anything else you may need at the event. Contact us at advocacy@canceradvocacy.org or 301.650.9127.
Here are some tips for successfully staffing an NCCS information booth:
- Enlist your friends! You'll need to have enough people to talk to all the people who come by and work the booth for the duration of the event – and allow for bathroom breaks and snack runs.
- Bring plenty of water and a sun hat, and be sure to wear sunblock, even if it's overcast!
- Take pictures to share with NCCS! We'll post them on our Web site to show off your hard work and encourage other Cancer Advocacy Now!™ Advocates to do the same.
- At the end of the event, be sure to report back to NCCS and return all the sign-up sheets so we can add the new members to our network.
