Living Beyond Cancer

Ending treatment is a bittersweet moment for many survivors, and they are often unaware of their new health care needs. This program focuses on adapting back to life when treatment is over. It explores living with after effects, dealing with intimacy issues, communicating with family members, dealing with the emotional aspects of cancer, getting ones house in order, and, importantly, maintaining hope.

Tips for the provider to keep in mind:

  • Some survivors have to learn how to live with permanent changes in how their bodies look or function, so they need appropriate referrals to a rehabilitation specialist or a mental health provider.
  • Intimacy, sexuality, and fertility issues are often neglected topics for cancer survivors. A growing number of doctors, nurses, social workers, and other providers are not only comfortable talking about sexuality and intimacy, but they have developed a great deal of expertise in it.
  • A cancer diagnosis for one family member can change the ways the entire family communicates and gets along. Sometimes, the change can have long-lasting effects on all family members.
  • It is very important for survivors and people close to them to recognize how difficult it is to resume a positive, life-oriented, and future-focused outlook after experiencing the fear of death brought about by a cancer diagnosis. Hope is a necessary element for healthy coping that can help survivors avoid despair, and they should know that there is always something to hope for.
