First Steps for the Newly Diagnosed

This program focuses on what needs to be done in the first weeks and months after a diagnosis. Using survivor stories as examples, the program covers gathering information and resources, selecting a care team and getting a care plan, reviewing ones health insurance policy, and talking about a diagnosis with others. It helps to reinforce that others have been through the experience and have been able to navigate difficult issues as well.

Tips for the provider to keep in mind:

  • Survivors may need to listen to this program several times to absorb all of the information because cancer and its treatment are so complex.
  • Survivors will benefit from having a list of the members of their health care team.
  • Some survivors might not want to burden loved ones or do not realize the different types of social support that exist. Providers can be instrumental in suggesting that they ask for help from family, such as a spouse or partner, siblings, children, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends, or other friends, which may include co-workers, people in ones faith community or church, and neighbors.
