Calling Your Public Official

Policymakers pay attention when constituents phone to express their views. If an issue is moving fast, calling may be the best way to convey your message in order to make an impact.

Your phone call will be most effective if you follow a few simple guidelines:

  • Prepare your remarks prior to your call.
  • Anticipate speaking to a staff member. Ask to talk with the legislative assistant responsible for healthcare issues.
  • Identify yourself as a constituent.
  • Say what you are calling about (bill number, issue).
  • State what you want your legislator to do. Be specific and have a precise request.
  • Be positive and courteous.
  • Leave your name, address, and phone number. Request that your legislator follow up with a letter. Ask for his or her position in writing on the issue.

  • If you don’t want to call Washington, D.C., look in your local phone directory to find your Senators’ and Representative’s district or local offices or check their websites.
